As I hopefully anticipate the “reopening” of California this month, I find myself thinking back on the year. Can one word capture all that has transpired? I am able to list a string of descriptive adjectives easily tagged to these past 15 months. But, is there just ONE word that can seize the highs and lows of this experience?
After giving up riding roller coasters in my 40’s, I can still remember getting off the wooden roller coaster Big Dipper at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Gingerly walking over to a bench, I turned to my friend and said, ”Never Again!” This year has been an emotional rollercoaster. There were so many times I wanted it to stop so I could exit the tumultuous ride. But, had I gotten off, I would I have missed the “awe.”
The awe of viewing our world from above for a few golden moments. Seeing what transpires below from such a distinct perspective. Then the quick decent to be within the noise and structure of all that was going on.
The coaster’s view from both the top and the bottom give different perspectives. But what stands out among the challenges, the difficulties, and inconveniences is the PEOPLE.
Witnessing the emotional excitement of seeing and being close to a family member … joy blossoms despite the seed of despair that was planted by the virus. The healthcare workers who have given up their family life to hold the hand of a patient/stranger leaving this life to encounter the next. The many friends and families having lost one or even more of their own facing what comes next with courage and grace. Neighborhoods responding in unison to show support for essential workers. Human kindness is the best response in uncertain times.
The residents of Crossroads have led the way for me during this troubled time. The women became the teachers. I was the student when it came to learning how to survive quarantine. The residents had mastered living in confinement from their past. They showed me how to find joy in the mundane. Limitations became endeavors of creativity and taught me how to survive in confinement.
Through all the ups and downs, twists and turns, donors and volunteers continued to give of their time, skills and financial assistance. At a time when the world was keeping to itself to stay safe, our donors stepped out to continue their giving … and then they gave more.
